Arshak Sirunyan, a distinguished composer and pianist, hails from the culturally rich city of Yerevan, Armenia. By the age of seven, his prodigious musical talent had already garnered the attention of Sergey Kechek, director of the prestigious A. Spendiarov School of Music, a leading musical academy in Armenia. Under the tutelage of the esteemed piano tutor Arkuhi Harutyunyan, Arshak honed his skills in classical piano over the next decade. His dedication and artistry were recognized with a third-place award at the 1994 Armenian National J. S. Bach Concerto Competition. Arshak furthered his education at the renowned Komitas State Conservatory, where he specialized in Composition and Piano Performance, studying under the guidance of eminent mentors Stephan Rostomyan and Georgy Kasabyan. His career as a composer spans a diverse array of works, from classical to contemporary compositions for vocal, piano, clarinet, string quartet, and symphonic orchestra. Notably, in 2002, the Armenian Komitas String Quartet performed his composition dedicated to the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck Armenia 14 years earlier. In May 2023, Arshak’s original full-length ballet premiered at the Maryland Theater, performed by The City Ballet School and the Maryland Symphonic Orchestra, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career.
Arshak has also made significant contributions to the recording industry, founding and producing a series of acclaimed albums, including With a Song in My Heart (2008), Journal (2010), Hoodman’s Blind (2014), and Serendipity (2015). His composition “Twitching Eye” from the album Journal received an Honorable Mention in the 2010 International Songwriting Competition. The Hoodman’s Blind project stands out as a collaborative effort with several Grammy Award-winning and nominated musicians, including Mike Stern, Omar Hakim, Eric Marienthal, Bob Frachescini, Arto Tuncboyaciyan, and others. Released on March 2, 2014, the album was heralded by All About Jazz as “one of the most unique and compelling releases of the year.” It achieved first place in two categories at the 2014 International Songwriting Competition, with the track “Hoodman’s Blind” winning in Jazz and “Valor & Triumph” in Instrumental. Additionally, the track “Messenger” was awarded an Honorable Mention.
